Christmas Drinks 1st December at Flamingo

Dear members,

Because it will be December before we know it we would like to take this opportunity to invite members to our end of year drinks which will be taking place on Friday 1st December 2017 from 6.30pm at the newly opened Flamingo LGBT cocktail bar at 29-30 High Holborn, London.

We hope it will be a nice chance for people to unwind after a week in court and allow us to support a fairly new local LGBT venue which is not too far from chambers. The aim is to have a fun social event where people from the LGBT community can meet and mix.

There will be a little money behind the bar and there is no entrance fee. Partners and friends are very welcome

Please save the date and we look forward to seeing you there

Please RSVP to me so I have an idea of numbers

Retirement Planning for LGBTI Barristers 2nd October 2017

Retirement Planning for LGBTI Barristers

Date 2nd October 2017

Time: 6pm

Venue: 57-60 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Garden Court Chambers, London, WC2A 3LJ

Refreshments and nibbles will be available at the event sponsored by Garden Court Chambers and BLAGG.

Retirement Planning for LGBTI Barristers by the LGBTI specialist-Equality Wealth Management

Malcolm Cuthbert of Equality Wealth Management will be talking to BLAGG members about retirement planning for LGBTI barristers and their partners.

Malcolm Cuthbert is married to his husband-Ronald and they have had four children together through surrogacy!

Malcolm has specialized in wealth management for same sex parents but has also focused on LGBTI barristers and their partners.

Malcolm has provided other talks at other chambers and the feedback was that he was “insightful and thought provoking”.

Malcolm will focus on and expand on some of the following do’s and dont’s:

  1. Saving for your retirement-how much to save, how tax relief works, and why private pensions can still work for barristers.
  2. Compounding and how it is important to start young!
  3. The Annual Allowance taper and how this might impact on how much you can contribute and the Lifetime Allowance and what affect this might have on your retirement plans.
  4. Other ways to save for retirement including property (your home and/or buy to lets) and the tax treatment of the same. Also ISA’s both cash and equity. Also VCT’s and EIS’s.
  5. The need to diversify from just one asset class (property!) and using tax efficient wrappers to maximise income in retirement.
  6. When and how to take the money out so annuities can be drawndown.
  7. Passing on your pension to your partner/friends or family.

Malcolm recently co-wrote a guide to LGBTI retirement planning which will be available to those coming to the event.

Spaces are limited please rsvp to

Research on LGBTQ+ experiences at the Bar – 25th September 2017 panel event

box 1 logo

On 25 September 2017, there will be a launch event of the results of the world’s first research into the experiences of LGBT+ members of the Bar. It is based on work undertaken in 2016: a survey with 126 LGBT+ barristers, QCs, pupils and BPTC students; and 37 linked interviews.

The launch will take place at 7pm at Fyvie Hall on Regent Street. The Rt. Hon. Maria Miller MP (Chair of the Women and Equalities Select Committee) will open the event. Dr Steven Vaughan and his co-author, Marc Mason (University of Westminster),  will then speak to the research results. Following the results, a panel, with representatives from the Bar Standards Board, FreeBar, BLAGG and 29 Bedford Row, will offer some short reflections on the outcomes of the research.

The event is free to attend and will be followed by a drinks reception, generously supported by 29 Bedford Rowand UCL’s Centre for Ethics and Law. Further information, directions to the venue, and details on how to sign-up can be found here:

We hope many BLAGG members can attend and feel free to pass the sign-up link/invitation on to any of your contacts you think might be interested

Join us at Pride in London on Saturday 25th June 2016

On Saturday 25th  June 2016, the Law Society will be leading a group of legal sector representatives in the Pride in London parade. The legal sector will be represented by BLAGG members, LAGLA, ILEX, Bar Council, Interlaw plus others marching together under the legal sector banner.

We will be once again celebrating lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) diversity in the legal profession under the banner ‘All are equal under the law’.

Please register to attend the march.

The invitation extends to lawyers, non lawyers, LGBT and allies to join us to march for equality with the legal sector! Friends and family plus dogs are all welcome to join us too!

Please email to register. (You must register so that a lovely purple t-shirt can be ordered for you.)

Before the event there will be networking drinks on Friday 24 June from 18:00 – 20:00 at the offices of the Law Society on Chancery Lane. You’ll be able to network with other marchers from the legal sector and collect your free t-shirt.

On the day

The parade is on Saturday 25 June.

The official meeting point for the legal sector will be Portland Place at 12:30. The parade will start at 13:00.

A post-march party will start immediately after the parade ends which will provide ample opportunity for networking and socialising. This is held at Walkers of Whitehall.

This year’s Pride theme is #nofilter, to emphasise that no one should have to live their life pretending to be someone they’re not.

The legal profession is joining in with the theme with our message: #lawwithnofilter – All are equal under the law.

Support our campaign by tweeting a selfie on 6 June using the hashtag #lawwithnofilter.

It’s easy to get involved. Take a photo of yourself holding a banner, plaque, board, sheet of paper or whatever is around the office with your name, job title, and LGBT or ally identity.

For example:

John Wills, solicitor, I have a husband #lawwithnofilter

Jane Smith, team leader, gay woman #lawwithnofilter

Jack Jones, customer services, gender fluid #lawwithnofilter

Sophie Taylor, adviser, straight ally #lawwithnofilter

All expressions of identity are welcome.

Why are we marching?

Equality for all under the law is a principle that the legal sector as a whole supports and works to promote. Lawyers are advocates of equal rights for all, whether that is challenging those who make unjust decisions, or defending those who face discrimination of any kind. Lawyers are also a diverse group of human beings, who play as well as work, and can face discrimination themselves.

Find out more by going on the law society’s website
